From DNA to Organism: A Study in DNA Function for the High School Biology Classroom

Module 2: DNA and genes

Dear Biology Students,

The students will be introduced to the idea that the cells of an organism contain DNA. They will look at the structure of DNA and how it codes for living things (transcription and translation). The students will begin by extracting the DNA from a sample of the mysterious plant. Samples will also be taken from a wild type plant. The samples of DNA will be purified and then amplified using PCR to make copies of the gene in question. The PCR product will then be run out using gel electrophoresis to identify the desired gene in the two samples.

Lectures: DNA histroy/DNA structure
PCR introduction
Electrophoresis introduction

Labs: Extraction of DNA
